H.S. ROUNDUP: New Wash surges past Jeff to take nailbiter in five sets

Ricks records double-double for Mustangs

JEFFERSONVILLE — After winning the opening set of the match, the New Washington volleyball team soon found itself in a bad spot after dropping the next two to Jeffersonville in a showdown on Thursday night at Johnson Arena.

But the Mustangs settled down and took control by winning the final two sets to take the match, 25-16, 11-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-9, in what turned out to be a very competitive night for the teams.

Senior Caroline Ricks led New Washington with 21 kills, 19 digs, six service aces and three blocks. Teammate Courtney Amick dished out 17 assists, and Mustang senior Ashley Johnson had three blocks.

Jeff looked to have the match under control midway through, but allowed New Washington to rally, thus stealing the next two must-win sets.

Even though Jeff let this one slip away, Red Devils’ coach Renee Stock had some pleasant thoughts after the match.

“Mary Pat Geary had a great net game. She was very aggressive hitting and blocking,” Stock said.

Stock also credited Jeff setter Jena Reinhardt.

“She hustled and played well on offense and defense,” Stock said.
