Seven players had multi-hit games as the New Washington softball team pounded out a season-best 17 hits in a 14-5 victory over visiting Austin on Wednesday.

Kayla Shackelford had three hits and three runs for the Mustangs. Sophomore Katie Rager had two hits and also picked up her first win of the season on the mound by striking out four in four innings.

“We’re capable anytime of hitting the ball,” said New Wash assistant coach Bill Broughton. “But tonight we were very focused and hit the ball real well.”

The Mustangs led 4-1 entering the fourth, but saw the visitors plate four runs in the top half to take the lead.

New Wash (3-3) then scored six times in the bottom of the inning to seize control for good.

“It was nice because we didn’t give up when the game went back-and-forth,” Broughton said. “We let our bats get us back in the game and stayed confident.”

Casey Johnson, Kelsie McKee and Sammi Sarver each added two hits for New Wash, which will face Scottsburg Friday.

• Mills, Wright homer for Floyd: Libby Wright and Brittany Mills each homered, helping Floyd Central to an 8-0 home victory over Madison.

Rena Philpot struck out five in five innings pitched to improve her record to 4-0 for the Highlanders (6-1). Mills, Brittney Bellus and Jenna Mackin had two hits each in the victory.

“What was pleasing was seeing the girls take the offensive advice from our assistant coach (Willie) Lozado,” said Floyd coach Joe Witten. “You could see improvements in our offensive production almost throughout our lineup top to bottom.”

Floyd will face both Meade County and Providence at home tonight.

• Pioneers drop another close one: Corydon scored an unearned run in both in the first and second innings as they defeated the Pioneers, 3-1.

The leadoff batter in each inning reached on an error for the Panthers.

“It’s been the story of our season,” said Providence coach Sean Payne. “We make mistakes and the other team takes advantage of those. This was another one of those situations.”

Laura Clements had a triple and a strong effort defensively, turning a pair of double plays in the field for Providence. The Pioneers travel to Floyd Central today.

BASEBALL

• Floyd blasts North Harrison: Dylan Bleemel allowed two hits in five innings as Floyd Central blasted North Harrison, 17-0.

The Highlanders had nine hits and took advantage of nine errors by the Cougars to secure the victory. Tyler Amos and Kyle Naville had doubles in the win for Floyd.

Jim Bob Schuler took the loss on the mound for North Harrison.

The Highlanders host Providence tonight.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Jeff beats Jennings County: Toba Omotinugbon won the shot put and discus, helping Jeffersonville to a 74-49 victory over Jennings County in a dual meet at Blair Field.

Jeff will compete in the Floyd Central Invitational on Friday.

Senior Andrea Newcom made her senior night a memorable one in the girls’ meet, setting a new JHS record in the pole vault as the Red Devils won, 98-29.

Newcom broke her own record with a vault of 11-feet, eclipsing her old mark of 10-0. Jeff’s other senior, Stephanie Lander, also had a big night, winning the 800 in 2:43, while also running on the victorious 1,600 relay team with Shelby Simcoe, Rachel Cox and Devin Conway.

Jeffersonville will host the Jeff Invitational on Friday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Dragons oust Clarksville, 4-1: On Tuesday, host Silver Creek won four matches in straight sets to down Clarksville, 4-1.

In a match between two of the best singles players in the area, Dragon senior Sarah Hebble, who will play at Ball State next season, defeated Generals’ sophomore Deahna Welcher, 6-0, 6-3. It was Welcher’s first loss of 2008.

Also winning for Silver Creek were Morgan Coquerille at No. 2 singles, Taylor East and Kendall Reagan at one doubles and Cayleigh Yost and Ally DeWeese at two doubles.
