HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Dogs bully Holy Cross, 15-0

A night after its offense was held in check against Jeffersonville, the New Albany baseball team’s bats were scorching hot against host Holy Cross on Thursday.

The Bulldogs pounded 21 hits, had seven players record multihit games and had 11 total players reach base in a 15-0 drubbing of the Cougars.

All the offense was more than enough to support a strong effort by pitcher Jacob Jones, who faced just two batters over the minimum in holding the hosts to one hit with four strikeouts in the victory.

Sean Godfrey, Simon Weber and Jason Cruse each went 3-for-4 for the Bulldogs, while Graham Brown, Nathan Poff, Erik Winburn and Travis Sands all added a pair of hits in the victory.

New Albany (6-3) will host Evansville Reitz on Saturday.

• Big inning boosts Braves: Dylan Martin had a home run and four RBIs, helping Borden defeat visiting West Washington, 13-4.

The Braves (5-4) trailed the game 4-3 entering the bottom of the fifth, but strung together six hits and eight runs in the frame to put the contest away.

“We got into the fifth inning before we realized that we were in a tight game,” said Borden coach Brian Agnew. “Finally, our bats came alive and we were able to put some runs up on the board.”

Borden’s Jeremy Blandford and Daniel Humphrey each collected three hits. Kyle Craig was the winner on the mound.

Borden will travel to Lanesville Saturday.

• Hornets rip Orleans: Freshman Colin Connan drove in five runs and Kenny Harrell went 4-for-4 to continue a torrid start at the plate in an 18-3 Hornet victory over the host Bulldogs. Harrell now has six hits in eight at-bats to start the season.

Connan added three hits in a 17-hit attack for the Hornets. Pitcher Keifer Stifler improved to 3-1 on the year and also added two hits at the plate for Henryville (4-4). The Hornets’ Taylor Stone, Levi Powell and Cory Munk also had two hits.

Henryville visits Salem today.

• Pirates rebound with win: Two days after a home loss to Providence, Charlestown came back to post a 7-5 victory over host Scottsburg.

Cameron Metzger tossed a complete game and did not surrender an earned run in the win for the Pirates (4-3, 2-1 Mid-Southern Conference). He struck out eight and walked three to improve to 2-1 on the year. He also had three hits, two doubles and two RBIs.

“Cam threw real well and shook off some mistakes that we made behind him,” said Pirate coach Ricky Romans. “He put us in really good position to win the game.”

Chad Brady also collected three hits for the Pirates, who will travel to Switzerland County on Saturday for a doubleheader.

SOFTBALL

• Davis tosses no-no; Devils roll: Jeffersonville junior Chelsea Davis made her 2008 pitching debut a memorable one, allowing no hits in a 9-0 rout of Bedford North Lawrence.

Davis struck out eight in the victory, Jeff’s second straight shutout victory of the week, while helping Jeff move to 6-2 on the season.

“I’m real happy for Chelsea,” said Jeff coach Becky Shafer. “She had to miss a start last week when she was sick so for her to come out in her first time pitching this year and have a no-hitter is pretty amazing.

“I also want to credit Erin Harper. That’s two games in a row she’s caught a shutout, and she’s doing a great job of calling pitches right now.”

Cydney Wilcoxson doubled in the win for the Devils, who will play at Jasper on Saturday.

• Generals overcome errors, Charlestown: Clarksville committed six errors, but had 12 hits in a 9-5 victory over Charlestown — a game that featured a combined 16 errors by the two teams.

Erica Martin and Taylor Carta had two hits and two RBIs for the Generals. Kelly Betz added a pair of runs and also was the winning pitcher.

“Our offense came around a little bit,” said Clarksville coach Tim Hauber. “We made better contact than we have been this week and hit several balls hard.”

Charlestown managed two hits in the loss.

“Errors in the field killed us,” said Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman. “We played hard throughout and didn’t quit. Our young kids never were willing to give up. We just couldn’t come out of the hole we dug.”

Charlestown hosts Floyd Central today. Clarksville will host Madison on Saturday.

BOYS’ GOLF

• Henryville downed by Trinity Lutheran: The Hornets were defeated in a dual match by Trinity Lutheran at Champions Pointe, 184-189

Henryville’s Taylor Weeks was the medalist with a 44. Also for the Hornets, Jonathan Clark shot a 46, Nick Campbell a 48 and Cameron Tucker a 51.

“Taylor and Jonathan shot good rounds,” said Hornet coach Robin Embry. “Anytime you count a 50-something, it’s tough to turn in a good team score.”

Henryville will play Charlestown and Lanesville Tuesday at Hidden Creek Golf Club.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Dragon girls win Pirate Relays: Silver Creek won three events and scored 90 points on Wednesday to claim the 2008 Pirate Relays at Dutch Reis Field.

The short-handed Dragons squad, which was missing its senior members due to a school trip, claimed the high jump, shuttle hurdle and long jump titles to claim the eight-team event.

“We (the coaches) were extremely pleased with the victory,” said Creek coach Al Eckert. “To win this meet without our seniors (on senior trip) was a big accomplishment.”

Charlestown recorded two event wins on its way to a third-place effort.

“This was the best performance from our girls in the Pirate Relays in many years,” said Pirate coach Kim Carroll. “All the girls did a good job in their events.”

North Harrison took the overall title in the boys’ meet with the Pirates placing second. The Pirates had six overall event wins in the discus, shot put, shuttle hurdle relays, sprint medley relays, 800 relay and 400 relay. Silver Creek placed third with 60 points.
