Friday afternoon at Christian Academy of Indiana, Warriors pitcher Justin Sturgeon made April 18 a date he will remember forever.
The sophomore threw his first perfect game of his high school career, leading Christian Academy to a 16-0 victory over New Washington in five innings. Sturgeon struck out 10 Mustangs.
The Warriors (2-4) scored all 16 of their runs in the first three innings. That included seven in the bottom of the third, which was highlighted by a two-run home run by Josh McKain with none out. Teammate Evan Strong had two hits with a double and three RBIs.
“It was a great win after coming off a shaky start to the season,” CAI coach Ryan Wheeler said. “Justin stepped up and really threw the ball well. It was an all-around good game defensively.”
New Washington’s Taren Clapp was the losing pitcher. The Warriors visit Orleans today. The Mustangs (0-6) will host Henryville on Monday.
• Stone, Henryville blank Salem: Starting pitcher Taylor Stone tossed a two-hit shutout, guiding the Hornets to a 4-0 victory at Salem. Stone struck out eight and walked two.
Kiefer Stiffler led the Henryville offense with two doubles. The Hornets (5-4) also committed no errors, which pleased head coach Jeff Schroeder.
“Stone pitched a good game. He hit his spots, and the defense turned a couple of double plays behind him,” Schroeder said. “Defensively, we played well. It was a good effort by the kids.”
Henryville will visit New Washington on Monday.
SOFTBALL
• Embry fans 16 in Hornet loss: Tied 1-1 in the top of the 13th inning, visiting Pekin Eastern scored three runs in the frame and proceeded to knock off Henryville, 4-1.
The Musketeers tallied their first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field, and then collected a two-run single.
Despite going all 13 innings, Hornet pitcher Amanda Embry picked up her first loss of the season. She allowed one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out 16.
Embry helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double. Teammate Rebecca Snodgrass was also 3-for-5 and scored the Hornets’ lone run in the bottom of the first.
“You hate to hang your head on this one because the girls played well. A lot of my girls came up with some great plays,” Henryville coach Jenny Odle said. “Hats off to Eastern. They fought back and are a great team.”
Odle also thought the loss of her No. 5 batter, Tosha Embry, was a factor in the game. The senior left the contest in the third after colliding with a Pekin player at first base.
The Hornets (8-1) will travel to Brownstown on Monday.
• Mustangs fall at Scottsburg: New Washington stranded 10 runners on base to hand host Scottsburg its first win of the season, 5-4.
Trailing 4-2, the Warriorettes scored a run in the third and two in the fourth off Mustang relief pitcher Danielle Vogt, who got the loss.
New Washington’s Katie Rager went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while teammate Casey Johnson was 2-for-4.
“We hit the ball solid — we just hit it right at them,” Mustangs assistant coach Bill Broughton said. “You can’t leave 10 runners stranded.”
New Washington travels to Trinity Lutheran today for a doubleheader.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
• Warriors edge Generals, 3-2: Host Christian Academy swept its doubles matches en route to a 3-2 victory over Clarksville.
At No. 1 doubles, the Warrior tandem of Michelle Hewitt and Anita Vivanco downed Ashley Lind and Breanna Shireman, 6-1, 6-1. CAI’s No. 2 team of Abbigan Void and Kanya Koerber prevailed 6-1, 6-1.
The Warriors’ third point came at No. 2 singles with Natalie Winslow winning 6-2, 6-4.
Both of the Generals’ points were at singles. At the No. 1 spot, Deahna Welcher beat Ashley Roach, 6-0, 6-2. Clarksville’s No. 3 singles player Jamie Wilkerson won her fifth match in a row, defeating Jenny Ingle 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Generals will host Providence on Monday. CAI will travel to Corydon on Tuesday.
