TRACK & FIELD: Red Devils win Jeff Invite

JEFFERSONVILLE — Tom Kendall worried it was an omen when senior Stephanie Lander fell hard to the track within the first 100 meters of the first race Friday night at Blair Field.
In a way, though, it was.
Lander picked herself off the track and the Red Devils recovered to place fourth in the 3,200 relay.
The rest of the team recovered from the initial stumble to post a victory at the 39th installment of the Jeffersonville Girls’ Track Invitational.
Scoring in all but one event on the evening, the Red Devils tallied 111 points to edge second-place Ballard’s 100.
“It wasn’t a good start,” said Kendall, the Jeffersonville head coach. “I’ll take the way it finished though.”
Jeff had victories in four events, led by senior Andrea Newcom tying her own school record in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet and Austina Smith claiming the high jump.
The other two wins by Jeff came from Shanice Gohlson in the 100 and the 400 meter relay squad of Kyla Gallahar, Sher’lica Harbin, Brooklyn Kinnard and Gohlson.
“This wasn’t necessarily a win where we won a lot of races,” said Kendall. “But we were up there in most of the races. We needed a lot of different girls to score points to win this. I expected a tight race with Ballard and New Albany, and that’s what we got.”
Gohlson did most of the scoring for Jeff. On top of her victories in the relay and 100, she placed second in the long jump.
While the Bruins and Brownstown filled the second and third spots, respectively, New Albany and Floyd Central placed fourth and fifth overall.
The Dogs scored a victory in the 3,200 relay with the team of Stephanie Cave, Saisha Rairdon, Kim Condra and Carissa Martin. Rairdon (3,200) and Hali Alexander (300 hurdles) also had second-place efforts for New Albany.
The Highlanders’ lone win came in arguably the race of the night when Becky Kennedy ran down Henryville’s Maggie Gilstap in the final 50 meters to win the 400 by 0.06 seconds. Kennedy added a third-place effort in the 100 for the Highlanders.
Gilstrap paced Henryville’s sixth-place effort with her runner-up finish in the 400 and third-place effort in the long jump.
Providence was eighth overall with Elyce Williams’ fourth-place finish in the discus a team best. New Washington was ninth and was led by freshman Katelyn Walker, who was fourth overall in the high jump.
