Cydney Wilcoxson and Erin Harper each had an RBI single on Monday, helping Jeffersonville to a 2-1 opening-round win over Columbus East in the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.

Wilcoxson finished with two hits in the victory, including a double, and pitcher Megan Stirn was strong in allowing just one run and four hits in the victory for Jeff (12-6).

“We did the things we need to do to win,” said Jeff coach Becky Shafer, who beat the Olympian for the first time in her tenure at Jeffersonville. “In the innings that we scored we had three hits in both innings so our offense was there when we needed it to be.”

Jeff will host New Albany in the next round of the HHC on Wednesday.

• Dogs nip Seymour: New Albany’s Brittany Kaiser scored Chelsea Banks with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over Seymour at Prosser Field.

Faith Griffaw was the winner for New Albany, limiting the Owls to one hit as she picked up her 10th victory of the year.

The Dogs will travel to Jeff on Wednesday.

• Floyd moves on in HHC tourney: Floyd Central likewise advanced in the HHC tournament with a dominating 12-0 road win over Madison.

Rena Philpot improved to 8-2 on the mound, striking out seven in four innings. She carried a perfect game into the fifth, but surrendered a lead-off hit. Randa Harbison finished the Cubs off, striking out the side to combine with Philpot on the one-hit shutout.

Katie Phillips had two triples in the victory for Floyd, while Brittany Bellus, Libby Wright and Brittany Mills all added two hits.

Floyd Central will travel to Jennings County for a second-round game on Wednesday.

“I think Jennings County is the team to beat,” said Floyd coach Joe Witten. “It’s going to be a tough test, hopefully our girls are ready to face the challenge.”

• Big inning propels New Washington: The Mustangs plated four in the fifth inning to rally past host Providence, 7-4.

Katie Rager went 3-for-4 and Billie Broughton smacked two doubles in the win for the Mustangs.

“It’s good getting a win,” said New Wash assistant coach Bill Broughton. “We had struggled for a few games getting runs on the board so it’s nice to get some offense going.”

Casey Johnson and Kelsie McKee each added doubles in a 12-hit attack for the Mustangs (6-9). Natalie McDonough tripled in the loss for Providence.

Both teams play on the road today. The Mustangs travel to Henryville while Providence will face Orleans.

• Hornets squeak one out late: The visiting Hornets scored twice in the seventh inning to defeat Silver Creek at The Swamp, 2-0.

Amanda Embry struck out 16 batters and Ashley Dickerson hit an RBI double in the win for Henryville (16-3).

“Without Amanda’s pitching it could have very easily been a different outcome,” said Henryville coach Jenny Odle. “She kept them down long enough for us be able to finally get some runs across.”

Henryville host New Wash today.

BASEBALL

The Highlanders will host the Red Devils on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

• CAI upends New Wash: Christian Academy broke open a 4-2 game with four runs in the seventh as it beat host New Washington, 8-2.

Josh McKain went 3-for-4 and Evan Strong doubled in the win for CAI, who improved to 10-7. Brian Leezer, Drake Krohn and Nathan Hobbs all had doubles in the loss for New Washington.

“The first time we played (CAI), they put it on us pretty good,” said New Wash coach Darren Floyd. “We were there in this one but a few errors in the last inning really cost us.”

New Wash hosts Pekin tonight. CAI travels to Portland Christian tonight.

• Borden trips Orleans: Trevor Wagoner had a home run and both Dylan Martin and Camm Thompson doubled to help the Braves defeat Orleans, 12-5.

The Braves led 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth before scoring six times to put the contest away. Jeremy Blandford was the winning pitcher, improving to 5-4 on the season.

Borden (12-6) will travel to Henryville on Wednesday.

• Charlestown sneaks by Silver Creek: Brian Williams tossed a complete game and Joel Rodriguez plated two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies to help Charletown beat Silver Creek, 7-6.

Cameron Metzger and Clayton Merschbrock each went 3-for-3 and Travis Brown added a pair of hits for the Pirates, who were playing for just the second time in just over a week due to rainouts.

“We needed a game and we needed a victory,” said Charlestown coach Ricky Romans. “We haven’t been playing real consisten when we have played so to come out against a team in our conference and our sectional with a win is good.”

Charlestown travels to West Washington tonight.

• Hornets pounded, 11-0: Henryville was limited to only one hit as it was clubbed by host Lanesville, 11-1.

Taylor Stone doubled in the loss for the Hornets — who already had beaten the Eagles this season 13-12 last month.

“We couldn’t beat a decent little league team right now,” said Henryville coach Jeff Schroeder. “Until our guys are willing to put the effort into improving their games, we may not win many more games this year.

“It amazes me to see us score 13 runs on 14 hits against their No. 1 and then struggle to only one hit against somebody who isn’t their best guy.”

Henryville will travel to Borden Wednesday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Creek sweeps Jeffersonville: Silver Creek won four of five matches in straight sets as they upended Jeffersonville, 5-0.

Sarah Hebble and Kendall Regan each won singles matches in two sets and both Dragons doubles tandems emerged with similar wins.

The lone three set match saw Creek’s Taylor East beat Dee Roehm, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

• Borden defeats Ctown: The Braves won two singles matches in straight sets and both doubles spots in three sets as they beat Charlestown, 4-1.

Shelbi Bishop, Nicole Banet won in singles for Borden. The third and fourth point came in doubles, as Chelsea Blalock and Rachel Page won at No. 1 and Jordan Cook and Kelli Holthouser prevailed at No. 2 in three sets.

“This was our second tough loss in a row. When Holly closed out her second set at three singles, I thought our doubles were both still in good shape to have chances to win,” said Charlestown coach Chris Ryan. “Borden did a really good job of overcoming both first set losses at the doubles spots. Our girls are getting better at competing in matches, and hopefully that will lead to our winning some of these close matches soon in these situations.”
