Two games meant two victories for the New Albany baseball team on Friday.
The Bulldogs opened up a 9-0 lead before visiting Silver Creek could plate a run in a 10-1 victory over the visiting Dragons in Game 1. That was followed by a shut out victory over Paoli, 8-0.
Travis Sands pitched New Albany to a victory in Game 1, giving up just one earned run in five innings of work with seven strikeouts. He was supported by an offense that generated 12 hits, including doubles from Jason Cruse, Phil Forbis, Simon Weber and Travis Robb. Forbis and Sean Godfrey each drove in three runs in the victory.
Forbis picked up the victory on the mound against the Rams, who were held to four hits.
Nathan Poff was the offensive star of Game 2, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs. It was also a solid display of timely hitting for the Dogs (17-7), as all eight runs came with two outs.
“It was just nice to finally get to play,” said Bulldog coach Chris McIntyre. “The rain really put a damper on this week. We just had good pitching in both games.”
The Bulldogs will host the Stan Sajko Invitational on Tuesday, opening with Clarksville at 5 p.m.
• Bad day for Jeff: Columbus East scored once in the first and third innings and it turned out to be enough, as Jeffersonville lost to the Olympians, 2-1.
“We just didn’t hit it very well and never got anything going,” said Jeff coach Al Rabe. “All in all, it was not a very good day.”
Brian Mendenhall hit a double for Jeff, which hosts a doubleheader with Bloomington North and South today beginning at 12 p.m.
• Big first inning propels Braves: Host Borden delivered nine runs in the bottom of the first inning in a 13-3 victory over Crothersville to improve to 4-1 in Southern Athletic Conference play.
Drake Potts went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Braves (13-7), while Trevor Wagoner went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
“It was nice to get to 4-1 in the conference,” said Borden coach Brian Agnew. “We’re Hornet fans tonight.”
The Braves will need Henryville to beat unbeaten South Central in a SAC contest tonight in order to claim a share of first place. Borden travels to Clarksville today.
• Floyd squeaks by: The host Highlanders took a 5-1 lead and held on in a 6-5 victory over Tell City.
Cory Wade got the win on the mound to improve to 2-0 for Floyd (17-9), which hosts. Bloomington North and Bloomington South in a doubleheader today.
• Smith ties record in Pioneer romp: Josh Smith tied the record for most pitching victories in a Providence uniform, notching his 22nd in a 23-0 win over Louisville Southern.

SOFTBALL
• Big fourth enough for Bulldogs: Host New Albany scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to upend Clarksville, 5-3.
The Generals had eight hits, but could never seem to solve Bulldog ace Faith Griffaw, who improved to 11-9 on the year. Amber Wingler took the loss for Clarksville (18-8).
Paige Wells tripled in the win for the Bulldogs (11-10), who will begin sectional play against Seymour on Tuesday.
