The Floyd Central girls’ golf team shot a second-round 196 to win the Sunnyside Classic on Wednesday at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville. The Highlanders fired a two-round score of 382.

Junior Kristen Reed paced the Highlanders, earning medalist honors with a two-round 81. Reed shot a 41 on Tuesday at Valley View Golf Club and a 40 on Wednesday at Champions Pointe.

Teammate Janice Heffernan fired a 92, followed by Floyd sophomore Bethany Huber with a 101.

Providence wound up second with a total score of 410. Sophomore Jennifer McCallister paced the Pioneers with a 98, while teammate Clancy Hauber had a 101.

New Albany placed third with a 419. Leading the Bulldogs was senior Kylia Sullivan with a 92, while fellow senior Abby Naville had a 98. Naville shot the lowest nine-hole round of the tourney with a 39 at Champions Pointe. Jeffersonville placed fourth with a 493.

Floyd will visit Tell City on Tuesday. Providence hosts Corydon at Covered Bridge Golf Club today. New Albany will face Pekin Eastern and Silver Creek at Hidden Creek Golf Club on Friday.

• Hornets beat Borden: Carissa Embry scored medalist honors by shooting a 50, and Henryville enjoyed one of its most consistent rounds of the season as it defeated Borden at Hoosier Hills Golf Course, 223-242.

Katie Spellman (54), Katie Cleveland (59) and Sara Hensen (60) completed the scoring on the day for Henryville.

Brittany Newton led Borden with a score of 55.

“Our No. 3 and 4 girls are seeing their scores start to come down,” said Henryville coach Robin Embry. “Having one of them under 60 and another right at that score shows progress from the two of them.”

Henryville will face Charlestown next Wednesday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

• Eastern trips Clarksville: Pekin Eastern edged Clarksville by winning a three-set match at No. 3 singles to score a 3-2 victory.

Clarksville’s Robert and Jeremy Noe each provided the Generals with victories at the No. 1 and 2 singles spots, respectively. However, the Musketeers managed victories at both doubles positions — leaving the contest in the hands of the No. 3 singles spot.

Clarksville’s Matt Denton managed an opening set win over Jaben Temple in that match, but could not hang on as he was defeated 6-7, 6-0, 6-0.

“We played very well and continue to show improvement,” Clarksville coach Stephen Welcher said. “I am excited about the rest of our season.”

The Generals will play in the New Albany Invitational on Friday.
