Highlander girls win fourth straight sectional

Floyd Central holds another tourney foe scoreless in 7-0 win

FLOYDS KNOBS — Four games. Four shutouts. Four straight sectional championships.

The Floyd Central girls’ soccer seniors capped off the season the only way they’ve know how — winning a sectional title.

On Monday, the Highlanders finished their latest victory, blanking Corydon Central in the final of the Floyd Central Sectional, 7-0.

“That’s four straight and that meant a lot to our seniors out there,” said. “Winning this one, they’ve been able to do it all four years now.”

Monday’s marked the fourth straight postseason game in which the Highlanders did not yield a goal as they outscored their sectional foes 26-0 in their victories.

“Defense has been outstanding,” Stevens said. “You really can’t ask for much more out of what we’ve gotten on that side of the field.”

The win over the Panthers was rarely in doubt after Taylor Patty booted home the first Highlander goal of the night slightly more than 20 minutes into the game.

The lead reached 2-0 less than 10 minutes later as Lauren Haley added another goal — which is where the score remained at halftime.

“(Corydon) really did do a nice job on defense in the first half,” said Stevens. “They packed it back on us defensively and made it tough for us to find scoring opportunities.”

Those chances became plentiful in the final 40 minutes. Jenny Miller scored 25 seconds into the second half and Patty scored twice in a five-minute stretch later in the half to make the score 5-0.

Two senior capped the scoring on the evening for the Highlanders. Lexi Ellis scored the sixth goal with 8:04 left and six minutes later Elizabeth Gootee scored the final point Floyd

“It’s just a good night for us,” Stevens said. “Corydon gave it a great effort nothing was easy for us, but my girls really came into this tournament set on winning the thing and I’m so proud of them for getting it done.”

The Highlanders now play in the Columbus Regional against Columbus North, the team that has beaten Floyd in back-to-back sectional finals.

“They’re tough and they’ve had our number out there,” said Stevens. “It’ll take another great effort by us but we’ll go up there and give it the best shot we can.”
