HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Royals beat New Albany in tourney opener, 41-23

Reed, Martin lead CAI boys by Covenant

INDIANAPOLIS —  In the opening round of the North Central Invitational, New Albany (2-7) ran into a streaking Hamilton Southeastern and was handed a 41-23 loss.

The Royals (6-5), who have won five of their last six games, stifled the Bulldog offense and forced 19 turnovers.

Southeastern took a 9-5 first quarter lead and used a 15-4 second quarter to boost the lead to 15 before the half.

“We didn’t execute on offense.” New Albany coach Tammy Geron. “I thought we played well on the defensive end. Holding them to 41 points, I thought that would give us a chance to win. We are missing two players. We are battling adversity right now and we need our younger girls to step up.”

The Bulldogs held the Royals to just 17 second-half points.

Jessica Knight was New Albany’s leading scorer and only Bulldog in double-figures scoring 11.

New Albany will continue action in the North Central Invitational consolation game today at 10 a.m. against Brebeuf (1-7), which lost to host North Central in the opening round, at 10 a.m.
