GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: No. 5 New Wash opens with big win over CAI

Musketeers remain unbeaten with 44-38 win over Southwestern

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Class A No. 5 New Washington had a balanced attack and beat Christian Academy 73-35 in Saturday’s season opener at James Matthews Gymnasium.

Ashley Johnson had a game highs 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists, Caroline Ricks added 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots and Brooke Abbott added 12 points and three steals.

“Coming into a new year, you never know what to expect,” New Washington assistant coach Kirsti Holloway said.

Courtney Amick shared team-high honors of five assists with Johnson. Holloway said having two players with five assists was a good sign.

“I was pleased with the way the girls shared the ball,” she said. “It shows that they’re looking for each other and they’re unselfish. It’s a fun team to watch when they’re passing the ball.”

Christian Academy was led by Allison Burch’s 19 points. She hit four 3-pointers in the Warriors’ third straight loss. Haley Caldwell added eight points and seven boards and Emily Huffaker had five points, six assists and five steals.
