H.S. BOYS’ SWIMMING: Jeff holds off Highlanders for HHC title

Devils sweep relays, win fifth consecutive conference crown

COLUMBUS — In a race that was much closer than expected, Jeffersonville used three relay victories to overcome Floyd Central by 46 points to earn its fifth consecutive Hoosier Hills Conference title.

Timothy “T” Martin, Evan Shive and Tyler Sariscsany were members of all three relay teams and won a fourth event by swimming a blazing 1:41.58 in the 200-yard freestyle — nearly seven seconds ahead of runner-up Eli Anderson of Floyd Central. Shive won the 100 butterfly in 51.93.

Max Weidekamp joined Martin, Shive and Sariscsany to win the 200 medley relay, Zak Griffis helped the Red Devils’ 200 freestyle relay and the 400 free relay teams to wins.

Griffis finished third in the 200 free behind Martin and Anderson. Sariscsany was the runner-up to Floyd’s Colin Lyell, who earned a pair of victories on the day, in the 50 free. Zach Daily, Michael Cain and Kevin Gast finished 2-3-4 behind Floyd’s Marc McCormick in the 500 free. Weidkamp finished third in the 100 backstroke and Jacob Stacy earned a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke for the champion Devils.

Floyd Central, which had the second-place team in all three relays, had four wins on the day as the Red Devils and Highlanders dominated the meet.

Lyell took the conference 50-yard freestyle title in 22.01 and the 100 free championship in 49.03. In fact, the Highlanders placed three of the top five in the 100 free and three of the top six in the 50 free.

Anderson added conference title in the backstroke — ahead of runner-up teammate Brendon Smith — to his runner-up finish in the 200 free. Nathan Manias finished third in the 50 free for the Highlanders.

Floyd will get another crack at Jeff on Feb. 22 in the Floyd Central Sectional. The Devils will be favored to win their fourth straight sectional crown.

New Albany finished seventh as a team on Saturday. The Bulldogs’ top finisher was Drake Miller, who was sixth in the 500 free. Adam McGaren finished eighth in the 100 free and the Bulldogs’ 400 free relay team of Miller, McGaren, Brady Faust and Noah Boone placed sixth.
