H.S. BOYS’ GOLF: Henryville's Davidson advances to regional

Hornet sophomore shoots 79 in Madison Sectional

MADISON — Henryville sophomore Luke Davidson earned his first-ever berth in the Providence Regional on Monday at Sunrise Golf Club.

Davidson was one of the top three golfers on non-advancing teams to qualify for the regional by shooting a 79 at Monday’s Madison Sectional. The other two golfers who advanced to Thursday’s regional at Champions Pointe Golf Club were Scottsburg’s Luke Taylor (79) and Christian Burch (81).

Davidson shot an even-par 36 on the front nine. He had birdies on the sixth and seventh holes and made par on five holes.

But he struggled on the back nine with a 43, as he bogeyed seven holes. Still, it was good enough to make it to regional at Champions Pointe, the Hornets’ home course.

“Luke has been consistent all season,” Henryville coach Robin Embry said. “His short game was excellent on the front. He struggled a bit on the back, but hung in there and advanced. I’m very happy for Luke and look forward to watching him play in his first regional.”

Henryville was the highest-finishing area team, placing fifth with a school-record team score of 338.

Hornets’ sophomore Mason Edwards was two strokes shy of qualifying for regional. He shot an 83 and was the only Henryville player to post a lower score on the backside (39) than the front (44).

Rounding out the scoring for the Hornets were junior Charlie Lefebvre with an 85 and Bailey Reister with a 91.

“We played very well, especially the front,” Embry said. “We were on pace to shoot in the 320s or even better if we would’ve maintained on the back. We faltered a bit on the back. However, we still carded a season-best and new school record. Luke, Charlie and Bailey shot personal-bests and Mason was just a shot off his personal-best. I’m very happy with the improvement this group has made this season.”

Rock Creek ended up eighth with a 421. Freshman Max Vogen led the Lions with a 91, while teammate Jeremiah Wilkinson shot a 94.

New Washington was 10th with a 439. Allen Crews posted the Mustangs’ lowest score with a 106.

Charlestown finished 11th with a 455. Brady Christman had the Pirates’ best score with a 106.

Madison won the sectional with a sectional-record 289. Jennings County placed second with a 308, and Rising Sun was third with a 317. The top three teams advanced to the Providence Regional.

The Cubs’ Jordan Griffith earned medalist honors with a 4-under-par 68. Teammate Carson Wattenbarger was the second-lowest medalist with a 73, earning the spot by winning a playoff against Rising Sun’s Bryce Murray.
