> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
Friday night will be Matt Pait’s debut as the Jeffersonville boys’ basketball coach.
He’s ready and he says his players will be ready when the Class 4A No. 13 Red Devils host Class 3A No. 5 Evansville Bosse on Friday, weather permitting.
“We’re ready to get after it,” he said. “We’re ready to play somebody different. The guys are tired of beating up on each other. They’re ready to see somebody else. This week has really drawn on.”
Bosse, which went 19-6 and won its third straight sectional a year ago, was expected to be one of the top teams in Indiana no matter the class in 2013-14. However, during the summer All-American JaQuan Lyle — who is being recruited by Connecticut, Kansas, Memphis and Arizona — transferred from Bosse to Huntington Prep in West Virginia.
Pait knows the Bulldogs will still be dangerous with four returning starters, including Perry Fairrow, who scored 15 points against the Devils a year ago.
“They’re a really good team,” Pait said. “Without Lyle, they don’t have that go-to guy, per se, but they still have some great players. They will be a great test early in the year.”
GAME OF THE WEEK
BOYS — EVANSVILLE HARRISON (1-1) AT NEW ALBANY (1-0)
DAY/TIME: Saturday, 8 p.m.
RANKINGS: Harrison — Class 4A No. 2 AP; No. 2 IBCA.
LAST 10 YEARS: Tied 5-5 (Harrison has won three straight).
LAST YEAR: At Harrison 66, New Albany 62.
REASON TO WATCH: Evansville Harrison is ranked No. 2 — and for good reason. The Warriors feature three Duncan brothers who all present serious challenges to the Bulldogs. New Albany’s road win over Bloomington South was arguably the most impressive win of any local team in the last week. Beating Harrison would certainly be an even louder a statement. Playing the game at the Doghouse give New Albany chance.
THE PICK: Evansville Harrison 70, New Albany 64.
