H.S. BOYS’ BASKETBALL: Cubs pull away from Highlanders

Floyd's Ervin scores 26 in defeat

MADISON — Class 3A No. 10 Madison outscored Floyd Central 22-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away for an 80-69 Hoosier Hills Conference victory in a makeup game on Monday.

Madison led 21-11 after one quarter but the Higlanders pulled within a points at the half after a 26-point second quarter. The game was still tight entering the fourth quarter with the Cubs leading 58-55.

Myles Ervin had a big game for Floyd, which fell to 3-13 overall and 2-4 in the HHC with the defeat. The junior point guard had 24 points on 10 of 19 shooting to go along with six steals and three assists in the loss. Junior J.C. Kinnaird added 18 points, freshman Cameron Simpson had six points and six boards and junior Mike Lewis chipped in with four points and a team-best 11 rebounds.

The Highlanders went just 6 of 29 from behind the 3-point line. Kinnaird went 3 for 10 from behind the arc.

Madison (12-3, 4-2 HHC) was led by Nick Macon, who had a game-high 27 points. Landon Perry added 21. Combined Macon and Perry knocked down six 3-pointers for the Cubs, who were 7 of 21 as a team.

The game featured 41 turnovers, 21 by the Highlanders. Floyd had 15 steals as a team. Kinnaird added three to Ervin’s game-high six. There were also 46 fouls called, 27 against the Highlanders. Kinnaird, Lewis, Zane Nichols and Connor Sturgeon each fouled out.

The Highlanders are back in action Saturday at Evansville Harrison. The Warriors, who opened the season ranked second in Indiana, are 12-6 after winning five straight and nine of their last 10. They beat Jeffersonville 78-64 on Saturday.
