HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Marcum named 4A All-State

Fourth NA player since ‘07 to make squad

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Recent New Albany High School graduate Tucker Marcum has made the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State first team for the 2014 season. Marcum earned a spot on the squad as a second baseman.

Marcum compiled a .408 batting average this past season with 12 doubles and 34 RBIs. Plus Marcum made only two errors at second base this past season, and set the all-time state record for most times hit by a pitch at 46.

Marcum, who was the Bulldogs’ leadoff batter, earned spots on this year’s News and Tribune All-Area first team and All-Hoosier Hills Conference first team.

“When we were facing the best competition, Tucker was not overwhelmed at the plate,” New Albany head baseball coach Chris McIntyre said. “It’s tough for our kids down here to make All-State because we do not have a lot of 4A teams in our area.

“He had the best season during his senior year. I can’t imagine anybody hitting from the leadoff spot getting 34 RBIs.”

Marcum became the fourth player in New Albany baseball history to make the All-State first team. The other three were former University of Louisville player Drew Haynes in 2007, current U of L player Jordan Striegel in 2011 and current University of Arkansas-Little Rock player Garrett Sherrell in 2013.

Five Clark-Floyd area players received honorable-mention votes for the 4A All-State team in Jeffersonville’s Drew Ellis and Chandler Dale, New Albany’s Brandon Johnson and Floyd Central’s Colton Kimm and Brandon Smith.

Ellis, who was named the 2014 News and Tribune Player of the Year, was the most notable player in that quintet.

This past season, the Jeffersonville shortstop compiled a .488 batting average with seven home runs and 25 RBIs. Ellis, who has signed a national letter of intent to play at Louisville, also had a .917 slugging percentage and .632 on-base percentage.

Ellis was named the Indiana District N Player of the Year by the IHSBCA.

Johnson, the Bulldogs’ ace pitcher, compiled a 9-2 record with a 1.66 ERA in 2014. Johnson will play at Xavier next season.

Dale was productive on the mound and at the plate. The Red Devils’ No. 1 pitcher had a 6-4 record with a 1.90 ERA and 79 strikeouts. Dale, who will walk-on at Louisville, had a .382 batting average and a team-high 32 RBIs.

Smith compiled a .447 batting average for the Highlanders with six homers and 31 RBIs. Kimm had a .392 batting average with one homer and 19 RBIs.

Ellis, Johnson, Dale and Smith each made the All-Area first team and the All-HHC first team. Kimm earned a spot on the All-Hoosier Hills first team and the All-Area second team.

Recent Borden graduate Garrett Vick made the IHSBCA Class A All-State honorable-mention list. Vick had a .468 batting average in 2014. He earned spots on the All-Southern Athletic Conference team and the All-Area second team.

Scottsburg’s Channing Collins was named to the Class 3A All-State honorable-mention list. Collins made the All-Mid-Southern Conference team this past season.
