H.S. BOYS' BASKETBALL: Pirates finish MSC play with win at Pekin

C’town 5-14 heading into Friday’s finale against Floyd

PEKIN — Charlestown closed out Mid-Southern Conference play with a 66-59 win at Eastern on Wednesday.

The Pirates finished MSC play with three straight victories, including road wins at Salem and Pekin. Charlestown led 31-26 at the half before being outscored 22-13 in the third quarter. The Pirates overcame the 48-44 deficit at the end of three quarters by outscoring Eastern 22-11 in the final period.

Hunter Crace scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Korey Harris finished with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Tanner Wesp had 13 points and 10 boards as the Pirates improved to 5-14 overall and 3-6 in the MSC heading into Friday’s regular-season finale at home against Floyd Central.

Grant Newcomb had a team-best 17 points for Eastern, which is also 5-14 heading into its final regular-season game at Springs Valley. The Musketeers, who finished 1-8 in the conference, hit nine 3-pointers as a team. Newcomb hit four 3s, Alex Doebler hit two 3s and finished with 16 points, and Jude Olesh, who made three 3-pointers, had 16 points in the loss.

    Eastern (5-14, 1-8 MSC): Grant Newcomb 17, Alex Doebler 16, Jude Olesh 13, Dakota Jackson 7, Jesse Murphy4, Dakota Snider 2.

    3-point field goals: Charlestown 4 (Harris 4); Eastern 9 (Newcomb 4, Olesh 3, Doebler 2).

    Free throws: Charlestown 12-23, Eastern 6-12.
