H.S. ROUNDUP: Pirates get to .500 mark with win over Generals, 65-30

Mustangs beat Lanesville to capture outright SAC crown

CLARKSVILLE — The Charlestown girls’ basketball team reached the .500 mark for the first time since Nov. 24 on Thursday with a 65-30 victory at Clarksville.

Sophomore Kaitlynn Henning paced the Pirates with a game-high 27 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Teammate Justice Burdin chipped in 17 points, while Charlestown senior Jasmine Harvey scored nine.

The Pirates pulled out to a 29-14 lead at halftime. After outscoring the Generals 8-6 in the third quarter, Charlestown reeled off 28 points in the fourth.

Clarksville had no players score in double figures. Junior Haley Jenkins and freshman Bailey Sharp each scored seven points for the Generals.

“We didn’t play bad, but we just didn’t convert shots early,” Generals’ coach B.D. Ledbetter said. “Some of our turnovers led to some buckets. We’re getting better, but the little mistakes are hurting us.”

NEXT: Charlestown (9-9, 4-4 Mid-Southern Conference) at North Harrison (6-12, 2-5), Tuesday; Clarksville (4-16, 0-7) at Borden (10-6), Tuesday.

• Mustangs claim outright SAC title: Class A No. 9 New Washington clinched the outright Southern Athletic Conference championship on Thursday with a 52-28 victory at Lanesville (10-8, 3-2 SAC).

It was the Mustangs’ first outright conference crown since the 2007-08 season. New Washington extended its winning streak to 10 games. No other details were reported at press time.

NEXT: New Washington (16-2, 5-0 SAC) at New Albany (9-9), Tuesday.

• New Albany’s win streak ends at Seymour: New Albany saw its three-game winning streak come to an on Thursday night, falling to host Seymour (9-11, 3-3 Hoosier Hills Conference) at Scott Gym 50-36.

Senior guard Tanner Marcum led the Bulldogs with 16 points, while teammate Claire Hirsch chipped in six. Teammate Brianne Nixon pulled down seven rebounds. The Owls’ Brianna Gillaspy scored 13.

NEXT: New Albany (9-9, 4-3 HHC) hosts Evansville Bosse (13-6), Saturday.

• Hornets fall at Eastern: Henryville suffered its third loss in four games with a 41-35 victory on Thursday at Eastern.

Emily Hollis led the Hornets with 14 points. Emma Hendricks poured in eight.

“Our girls showed a lot of heart and fight tonight,” Henryville coach Josh Conrad said. “We got down 17 [points] in the third quarter mainly because we missed some shots and gave up transition baskets. In the fourth quarter, we cut the lead to one with about two minutes to go. We had a possession where we didn’t execute down by one and that took away some of our momentum. Eastern did a good job getting the ball to the post and hitting their free throws down the stretch.”

For the Musketeers (9-11), Krista Roberts tallied 15 points and Brooke Rodewig had 14.

NEXT: Henryville (11-9) hosts Shawe Memorial (4-14), Tuesday.
