HS FOOTBALL: No. 1 East rolls past Floyd Central, 76-30

Olympians score 35 points in first quarter to stay undefeated

COLUMBUS — The first quarter of Floyd Central’s 76-30 loss to Class 4A No. 1 Columbus East on Friday night at Stafford Field could be summed up in one line from the movie “Anchorman” by its lead character Ron Burgundy, played by actor Will Ferrell.

“Boy, that escalated quickly … I mean that really got out of hand fast,” Burgundy said during the classic comedy film.

The Olympians went up 35-0 in the first 10 minutes and 15 seconds of the contest en route to scoring in the 70s for the first time since Week 4 of last season. For the game, Columbus East (6-0, 4-0 Hoosier Hills Conference) racked up 471 total yards, including 363 yards rushing. “We had a couple of breakdowns in the first quarter,” Floyd Central coach Brian Glesing said. “They’re a good football team — that’s why they are ranked No. 1. They’re bigger, faster and stronger than us and it showed. They’ll run the table probably in the Hoosier Hills Conference and make a run for the state playoffs.”

The Olympians needed five plays to get on the scoreboard first.

East running back Markell Jones got the call on the first four plays, rushing the ball each time for a combined 58 yards. The junior’s first carry resulted in 45 yards, placing the ball at the Highlander 15-yard line. Quarterback Alex Cowan capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run at the 10:32 mark of the first quarter, putting the Olympians up 7-0.

East’s defense got its next score. On second-and-8 at the Floyd 47, Highlander quarterback Colton Kimm got sacked and had the ball jarred loose from his hand. The Olympians’ Conner Roberts recovered the fumble and ran 40 yards into the end zone to put East up 14-0.

A three-and-out by Floyd Central (4-2, 3-1) resulted in another quick score by Olympians. On fourth-and-10, East receiver JT Voelker received a handoff on a reverse then threw the ball to a wide-open Rhett Myers for a 29-yard touchdown reception to increase the advantage to 21-0 with 6:07 left in the first quarter.

With 2:53 remaining in the opening quarter, the Olympians struck again when Jones scored his first TD of the night with a 28-yard run. After Kimm got intercepted by East junior defensive back Nick Beamish, Cowan hit wide receiver with a 43-yard TD toss on a post pattern to make the score 35-0 with 1:45 remaining in the period.

Following a blocked field goal by East with about 8:30 minutes left in the first half, Cowan scored two plays later on a 5-yard scamper to put East up 42-0. Then with 4:44 left in the second quarter, Jones entered the end zone again with a 23-yard TD run as the Olympians went up 49-0.

Floyd Central running back Gaige Klingsmith finally stopped the bleeding with 40 seconds left in the half with a 50-yard touchdown run. The Olympians led 49-7 at halftime.

East extended its lead to 56-7 right from the outset of the second half. Kimm lost another fumble while being sacked at the Olympian 8, and East’s Brock Patterson scooped the ball up in the end zone 15 seconds into the third quarter.

Klingsmith got his second TD with 7:28 left in the third on a 9-yard TD run, but East answered with two more TD runs, one a 67-yard scamper by Jones, to put itself up 69-13 at the end of the third.

The Highlanders scored two TDs in the fourth. Nick Uhl had a 3-yard TD run with 4:24 remaining in the regulation. Then Floyd Central senior defensive lineman Aaron Smith stripped the ball from East running back Steven O’Neal and returned the fumble 32 yards for a TD.

Klingsmith finished with 169 yards on 25 carries. Jones rushed the ball 13 times for 225 yards.

The Olympians extended their HHC winning streak to 46 games.

Floyd Central will host Bedford North Lawrence next Friday.
