Jeffersonville led unbeaten Louisville Eastern 5-4 after five innings, but five errors cost the Red Devils in a season-opening 6-5 loss to the Eagles.
“We really should have won the game,” Jeff coach Jodi Bradley said. “We just had some errors at some crucial times. We’ll chalk that up to [it being the season opener]. We’ll improve on the things we need to improve upon.”
Junior Courtney Shepherd went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in. She knocked home Emma Coons for the Red Devils’ first run of the season and Jeff went up 1-0 after the opening inning.
After Eastern (7-0) scored three times in the third and led 4-2 after the top-half of the fifth before the Devils scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Shepherd tied the game at 4-apiece with a two-RBI double — her second of the contest — and scored the go-ahead run on a Jocelyn Tinscher groundout.
“I expect that kind of performance from her,” Bradley said of Shepherd. “She worked really hard this summer. I expect big things from her.”
Jeff will look for its first win of the season when it hosts Lanesville tonight.
