The 2013 track and field season has been dominated by throwers in Southern Indiana.
Saturday at the IHSAA girls’ state track championships was no different.
Charlestown junior Megan Brooks led all local athletes with an 11th-place finish in the shot put at Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington.
The school-record holder and Jeffersonville Sectional champion threw the shot over 37 feet on all three of her throws, including a toss of 39-feet, 10 1/4-inches on her final throw to finish 11th in the state.
Brooks’ first throw went 38-9 1/4 and her second was 37-6 1/2. She was less than two feet from advancing to the final round.
Henryville’s Natalie Uhl placed 12th in the discus with a throw of 127-4. The junior’s first attempt went 123-1 and her second traveled 123-even before her final and best attempt of the evening. Her final toss moved her up seven places.
Uhl was just over two feet shy of advancing to the final round.
“It was a great accomplishment for Natalie,” Henryville coach Josh Conrad said. “She was close to making the finals but had a good close to the season. After today, I think she is even more motivated to get back and compete at next year’s meet.”
Floyd Central’s Leah Wolf finished 20th overall in the discus. The Highlander senior was dead last of 27 competitors heading into her final throw, but her 118-foot launch moved her up seven spots in the final event of her career. Lawrence Central’s Adriana Brown broke the state meet record with a throw of 168-6.
New Albany’s 400 relay team finished 24th overall with Markayla Stubbins, Courtney Palmer, Jayla Bethel and Aaliyah Bell. The Providence 1,600 relay squad of Maryashly Betz, Haley Corby, Charmaine Solis and Leah Mattingly finished 27th. The meet was the last for Pioneer standout seniors Betz and Mattingly.
Scottsburg’s Morgan McNeeley finished 10th in the 400, Ashton Bosler of North Harrison placed 25th in the 3,200 and 27th in the 1,600, Jennings County sophomore Keri Ertel was ninth in the 100 hurdles and 13th in the 300 hurdles and Madison’s Emily Holland came in eighth in the high jump.
Fort Wayne Northrop, which got wins from Dejah Arnold in the 400 and the Arnold-led 1,600 relay team, won the team championship with 60 points, nine ahead of runner-up Lawrence Central.
Eastern Greentown’s Bethany Neeley won the 800 and 1,600 to lead the Comets to a fourth-place finish. Her 2:07.91 in the 800 was a state meet record. Neeley’s 3,200 relay team also won a state championship.
