H.S. GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Matthews has resigned as Charlestown girls’ coach

New Wash grad hired to guide Pirates on May 8

CHARLESTOWN — According to online reports and the Courier-Journal’s Justin Sokeland, Scott Matthews unexpectedly resigned as the Charlestown High School girls’ basketball coach on Wednesday for undisclosed reasons.

Charlestown athletic director Chad Gilbert has reportedly posted an emergency job vacancy for the position that he hopes to fill the post by Tuesday.

Matthews — a New Washington graduate — was hired as the Pirates’ new coach on May 8. He replaced three-year Charlestown coach Sam Terrell, who compiled a 17-46 record during his Pirates’ tenure.

Matthews was a boys’ basketball varsity coach at three different schools — Madison Shawe, Austin and Clarksville — from 1999-2010. He compiled a 123-119 record during that span. His most successful campaign came in the 2001-02 campaign at Austin, as he guided the Eagles to a 20-5 record, a Mid-Southern Conference championship and the Class 2A sectional and regional titles.

Matthews is the fourth all-time leading scorer at New Washington, where he played for his father and the school’s all-time winningest coach, Jim Matthews. The younger Matthews helped the Mustangs win single-class sectional titles in 1988 and 1989.
