Kimmel falls short of 10th ARCA win at Salem

It appeared that Clarksville native and Borden resident Frank Kimmel was going to collect his 10th ARCA Racing Series victory at Salem Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

But Kimmel lost the lead on Lap 193 after getting slowed down by lapped traffic and then got spun out by eventual race winner Tom Hessert with five laps to go in Turn 1. As a result, Kimmel ended up sixth in the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200.

The nine-time ARCA champion led the most laps with 90, as he was in the top spot from lap 148-192.

Sellersburg resident Will Kimmel, Frank Kimmel’s nephew, finished third for his highest career finish in the ARCA Racing Series. The younger Kimmel was a lap down late in the race, but managed to get back on the lead lap and battle to the top-five finish.

Spencer Gallagher wound up second, while Kyle Weatherman was fourth. Travis Swaim placed fifth. Henryville resident Jason Basham finished 14th.

Despite not winning at his hometown track on Sunday, Frank Kimmel remains the ARCA points leader as he is 30 points ahead of Mason Mingus.

ARCA’s next race will be Friday at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
