H.S. BOYS' GOLF: Highlanders win 11th straight sectional

Jenkins wins second straight individual title

SELLERSBURG — Floyd Central won its 11th straight Providence Sectional championship by shooting a 295 at Covered Bridge Golf Club on Monday.

On Thursday, the second-ranked Highlanders will return to Covered Bridge to try to win their second regional crown in four years. They’ll be joined by Providence, which shot a 301, and Corydon Central at the regional.

Devin Jenkins won his second straight individual sectional crown on Monday. After needing a playoff to win last year’s sectional title, Jenkins shot a 71 to beat teammate Alex Beyer by a stroke in 2013. All five Highlanders shot below 80 on the par-72 course. Connor Welch and Daniel Shepherd each carded a 76, while Jack Sparrow finished the course in 78 strokes.

Providence was led by Cory Cahalan’s 1-over 73 and Kevin Crone’s 74. New Albany’s Garrett Arnold finished fifth with a 75. He’ll be joined as an individual by Silver Creek’s Sam Garr, who was one stroke behind Arnold and North Harrison’s Chase Spencer.

With a 236,, New Albany finished fourth as a team and also got a strong round from Dustin Miller, who shot an 80. Jeffersonville, which shot a 361 as a team, finished seventh, led by Dalton Naiser’s 78, and Borden finished eighth behind Tony Wagoner’s 82.

MADISON SECTIONAL

Rock Creek Academy’s Bett Kasteler shot an 81 and beat Switzerland County’s Clint Swanson on a playoff hole to advance to Thursday’s Providence Regional.

Madison easily won the title with a 293, which was 25 strokes ahead of runner-up Jennings County. Scottsburg was the third team to advance.

Henryville finished sixth with a 365. The Hornets were led by Luke Davidson and Mitchell Fields, who each shot a 16-over-par 88.

Charlestown finished 10th overall. Chris Braun’s 82 — one stroke from advancing — led the Pirates.

New Washington placed 12th and was paced by Collin Schindler’s 104.
