H.S. BOYS' TENNIS SECTIONAL ROUNDUP: Red Devils champs again

Jeff captures seventh title in a row with sweep of New Wash

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Jeffersonville boys’ tennis team is sectional champions again.

The 12th-ranked Red Devils won the Jeff Sectional championship for the seventh year in a row on Thursday at the Jeffersonville High School Tennis Center, defeating New Washington in the final 5-0. It was the Red Devils’ 20th sectional title in program history, as they have claimed a sectional crown in 17 of the last 19 seasons.

Jeff (17-1) only dropped one game in the entire match. That happened at No. 2 doubles as the Red Devil senior pair of Chase Kayrouz and Justin Padgett downed the Mustangs’ Dakota Dieterlen and Caleb Ellison, 6-0, 6-1.

“I was especially pleased for the two seniors tonight,” Jeff coach Mark Reilly said. “Justin and Chase played their last match at these courts together at the two doubles spot. It has been a nice four years for them. Each year, they have been a part of the team that won the sectional and were both freshmen on the team that went to the [IHSAA] Final Four [in 2010]. When these two look back at their high school days, I know that tennis will bring some great memories.”

Jeff singles players Austin Hunt, Brock Winchell and Connor Buntin each won in straight sets along with the Red Devil No. 1 doubles team of Sam Coward and Jack Reilly.

“We ran into a buzzsaw today,” New Washington coach Wayne Davis said. “Jeff is extremely good and on top of that we came out very tight and I don’t think we ever did get comfortable with our game.

“We had a very good year and I’m proud of my team. I’ve got some great kids, and we’ll do our best to improve and be back next year as a better team. Mark has a very strong team and I wish them the best of luck in the rest of the tournament.”

The Red Devils will face the winner of today’s Silver Creek Sectional final between the host Dragons and Borden in Tuesday’s Floyd Central Regional semifinals.
