H.S. FOOTBALL: Devils rout Seymour, 61-7

Hines scores five times, sets up Bassett for first of his career

JEFFERSONVILLE — After nearly a decade, the cannon that blasts after each Jeffersonville Red Devil touchdown has been reintroduced to Blair Field.

Those in the vicinity of the Jeffersonville High School last night who might have been blissfully unaware that there was a football game going on could have suspected that another “Pirates of the Caribbean” sequel was being filmed — or maybe a Civil War re-enactment was taking place — for all the action the cannon got.

Jeffersonville notched its second win of the season and first Hoosier Hills Conference victory by overwhelming visiting Seymour 61-7.

The domination was so complete that by midway in the second quarter the Owls (0-2, 0-1 HHC) agreed to operate under a running clock for the remainder of the contest.

“This team is starting to grow up, and we accomplished all the goals we set out for tonight in practice this week,” said Jeffersonville coach Lonnie Oldham. “Our goals now are to keep moving forward and improving as a football team.”

Senior running back Austin Hines took his first carry from scrimmage for a 57-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring for Jeffersonville. It was one of four touchdowns Hines, who finished with 143 yards on nine carries, would have for the Devils in the rout. He now has 10 touchdowns in two games this season.

He almost notched a fifth on Friday. He took an off-tackle run for 39 yards inside the Seymour 5 on second down midway through the second quarter, but ran out of bounds when he had a clear route into the end zone. On the very next play, senior Brenden Bassett scored the first touchdown of his Jeffersonville career to make the score 34-0 Jeffersonville with 8:18 remaining in the first half.

Bassett, who is nicknamed “Boom,” is a special needs student at Jeffersonville and has played mostly junior varsity throughout his career, but is so popular with his teammates they demanded he get his score — and mobbed him in the end zone when he did.

“One of the most unselfish things I’ve ever seen in my coaching career was to see Austin run out of bounds and help us get Boom in there,” Oldham said. “[Bassett] is a kid who has worked really hard and it was great to see him get in there.”

Sophomore quarterback Jamal Britt was accurate and efficient, finishing 3-of-4 for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. His night included strikes in the first half of 32 yards to Dalton Atkins and a screen pass that wideout Isiah Blanton took up the sidelines for an 85-yard score as time was running out towards intermission.

The Red Devils forced the Owls into 11 punts and Seymour only crossed midfield twice on offense. The Owls scored in the fourth quarter on a 18-yard touchdown pass from Chris Knight to Elijah Toborg, but that came after a bad snap and fumble by the Jeffersonville reserve offense on the opening play of a drive deep in their own territory.

“It was important for us to keep our focus tonight even when things started getting a little out of hand,” Oldham said. “I’m proud of the work these kids have done and hope they keep going.”

The Red Devils travel to Bedford North Lawrence to face the Stars on Friday night.
