Reader: Please don’t harm Community Park



My thanks to Matthew Nash for his wise words on the Opinions page recently. He put into words all the things I had been thinking concerning the use of our Community Park.

Citizens of Floyd County, I hope you will raise your voices against this latest ridiculous idea. Ask the county to please not destroy our park that is used by young and old. As Mr Nash pointed out, there are so many other options.

Thanks again, Mr Nash, for saying what I could not put into words as you did.

Dogs deserve to be safe too



I’m writing this letter to all the idiots out there that think that it’s OK to let your pets ride in the back end of your pickup trucks. Do you not realize the danger of doing this irresponsible action?

Not only are you putting the life of your animal in danger, but should there be an accident, you’re putting lives in danger also.

I witnessed an incident this past Saturday, Sept. 5, on Grant Line Road. At the stoplight at Grant Line and Mt. Tabor Road, there was a pickup next to me at the stop. There was a black lab in the back of the truck. He was so excited, he was all over the place. He even had his front paws on the side of the truck when the owner took off.

As we were going down Grant Line, I was in the left lane and the truck was in the right lane. As I thought, he was going straight and, at the last minute, he decided to take the Interstate 265 East ramp. He took that turn going about 30 to 40 mph and I don’t think that I need to tell you what happened next. That poor defenseless dog went flying over the side of that truck and bounced on the concrete hitting his head and landing on his side.

Everyone behind this truck was slamming on their brakes to keep from hitting this dog. My heart just sank. There was nothing that I could do. Thank goodness, he jumped up and the truck owner put him up front with him. But you cannot tell me that he wasn’t injured.

People, be responsible. This situation could have been a whole lot worse. I just wish that I could get that image out of my head.
