Jeffersonville City Council to vote for president, other offices

Meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Monday, with workshop to be held at 6:30 p.m.

The Jeffersonville City Council could elect a new president and vice president Monday.

Council President for 2008 Ed Zastawny said council members will meet in a workshop before the regular council meeting to discuss who will be appointed to various positions. They also will elect a president and vice president.

“Tradition has been in the previous few years that the vice presidents takes over as president the next year,” he said.

Connie Sellers was the 2008 vice president. She could not be reached for comment Friday.

“I think that would be good,” Zastawny said when asked if he would support Sellers for president.

He said there are typically some changes for appointments to various committees because a person no longer wants to serve in that capacity or has missed several meetings.

“I’m sure there will be some changes, but I don’t know how big they will be,” he said.

Also on the agenda Monday

• An ordinance calls for rezoning a nearly 2.4 acre tract of land across from Perrin Pointe on Utica Pike to low-density residential.

• Councilman Keith Fetz is on the agenda to discuss his resolution which would require the City Council to take additional steps to operate legislative meetings and government in a “paperless” manner. Fetz says the proposal will help the environment and save money. The resolution was tabled at last month’s meeting.

• Zastawny expects an ordinance to pass which would create a new City Hall Building Advisory Board.

The City Hall Building Authority is responsible for maintaining the building. Councilman Nathan Samuel said at a previous meeting that the authority has the power to approve contracts and similar matters without first getting the approval of the City Council or the Board of Public Works.

The ordinance expected Monday night would reign in some of that power, in order to avoid future conflicts, he said.

The workshop to discuss appointments and the election will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the mayor’s conference room at 500 Quartermaster Court. The regular council meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 101.
