Global warming tour to make New Albany stop

By DANIEL SUDDEATH
Daniel.Suddeath@newsandtribune.com

In conjunction with the city of New Albany and local organizations, the Greenpeace Global Warming Story Tour will make a stop at the city’s Riverfront Amphitheatre at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Greenpeace lobbies Congress on environmental issues and has been responsible for several demonstrations and projects, including a billboard campaign in Southern Indiana targeting Rep. Baron Hill, D-Ind.

Volunteers from Greenpeace also recently dropped a wall with petitions attached to congressional candidate Mike Sodrel’s office in Jeffersonville. The petitions were encouraging Sodrel to focus on environmental issues if he is elected.

Greenpeace’s tour features Rolling Sunlight, a demonstration and educational vehicle that runs on biodiesel and is equipped with 256 square feet of solar panels.

It has enough energy to power three homes, concerts and events without creating pollution. Rolling Sunlight will use solar power to run an action tent featuring a video station for visitors to learn more about global warming and provide Internet service so they can e-mail members of Congress.

Greenpeace members will interview visitors about how global warming is impacting their lives and testimonies will be recorded on video to send to Congress.

There also will be a showing of the movie “Happy Feet.”

Sponsors of the event include the City of New Albany, the New Albany Farmer’s Market and Develop New Albany.

For more information, contact Greenpeace Coordinator Edyta Sitko, at 812-219-4644.
