Jeffersonville teen walking to school hit by motorist

Alleged driver faces charges for leaving scene

A Louisville man faces charges after an alleged hit-and-run accident involving a teenager walking to school.

A 16-year-old male student was walking on East 10th Street toward Jeffersonville High School at about 7 a.m. Tuesday morning when he was struck by a motorist traveling eastbound. The driver apparently never stopped, said Detective Todd Hollis of the Jeffersonville Police Department.

Hollis said another motorist saw the vehicle’s license plate number and told police. They found the vehicle outside the methadone-treatment clinic and arrested 38-year-old Conley West.

Hollis said West told police he hit a deer.

The student was taken to the hospital and treated, but has since been released, Hollis said.

West was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and obstruction of justice. Police are waiting on tests to determine if West was impaired at the time he was driving. If the tests come back positive, new charges would be added.

West is being held in the Michael L. Becher Adult Corrections Complex awaiting his first court appearance.
