Restaurants offering vets free meals

Applebee’s will offer free meals to veterans and active military showing military ID, photo or uniform all day Wednesday, and Golden Corral will offer a free meal to veterans and active military on the honor system from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 16.

To qualify for the Applebee’s meal, participants must present one of the following: a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card; U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card; Current Leave and Earnings Statement; Veterans organization card (American Legion and VFW); photograph in uniform; DD214; citation or commendation; or be in uniform. Golden Corral’s ninth-annual military appreciation is offered with no proof required, other than your word you are a veteran.

Clark Memorial hosts bariatric seminar

The Clark Memorial Hospital Bariatric Program is hosting a free seminar at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12 for anyone considering a gastric banding procedure for weight loss at the hospital, 1220 Missouri Ave., Jeffersonville.

The free information seminar will be led by surgeons Dr. Brice Hamilton and Dr. Daniel MacMillan and includes information on obesity, the gastric banding procedure and a question-and-answer time.

Program coordinator Carolyn McKee will speak on the benefits of the comprehensive follow-up program at Clark Memorial, program successes, including a total weight loss for the program of more than 6,000 pounds, and basic insurance information.

School sets dates for talks

New Washington Middle/High School will host its parent-teacher conferences from 3:15 to 6:45 p.m. Nov. 12.

Carla Hobson will also host a New Washington and Beyond workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The workshop will focus on preparing for life after high school with information about college and careers.

• Sellersburg

Speed Memorial hosts turkey supper

Speed Memorial Church will celebrate community and fellowship at their 41st annual Turkey Supper and Bazaar at Nov. 14 in Silver Creek Middle School, 495 North Indiana Ave., Sellersburg.

Tickets will not be sold at the door. The supper features recipes from the late Evelyn Miller, a longtime church member, and includes roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, corn pudding, sweet potatoes, creamed turnips, green beans, cranberry salad, roll, dessert and a beverage. The Bazaar, hosted by the Women’s Christian Fellowship, will feature handcrafted items, such as crocheted and knitted afghans, quilts, scarves, blankets, seasonal decorations, and specialty food items.

Tickets are $8 for adults (10 and up); $6 for children ages 4 to 9 and free for children 3 and under. Tickets are limited and must be purchased by Monday.

Graceland hosts Mary Courtney

Mary Courtney will be in concert at 7 p.m. today at Graceland Baptist Church as part of a women’s evening of praise and inspiration, sponsored by Graceland’s Real Women, 3600 Kamer Miller Road, New Albany.

Mary Courtney is a nationally known speaker and concert minister. She has appeared at the White House and on Daystar Christian Television. Her topic will be “Let Go and Let God.” She has a powerful testimony and speaks openly about her battle with anorexia and her husband’s suicide.

PURE hosts movie on abortion issues

People Upholding Relationships with Encouragement, or PURE, of New Albany, will host the movie, “Come What May,” which explores the legal and moral issues of abortion at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at Indiana University Southeast’s Hoosier Room, 4201 Grant Line Road, New Albany.

The movie is intended for ages 10 and up. Tickets are $7 and proceeds support PURE. Call 812-941-0872 for more information.
