Artist assistance available

Representatives of the statewide Indiana Arts Commission will make their only visit to Southern Indiana from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Clarksville Town Hall, 2000 Broadway, Clarksville.

The IAC representatives will explain an opportunity for Hoosier artists in the areas of crafts, design, media arts, photography and visual arts to apply for up to $2,000 to strengthen their individual artistic and business skills through a variety of means. Those means are tailored to each individual artist’s needs and include professional instruction, consultation, travel, purchase of equipment, completing a body of work or mounting an exhibit.


Money on your mind?

Nancy Hudson, HHS Agent for the Clark County Purdue Extension Office, will be hosting a series on money management. The Money Matters series will be held at the Charlestown Library, 51 Clark Road, Charlestown.

Dates and topics for the series are as follows:

• Grocery and drugstore savings — 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6

• Going once, going twice, sold! — 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3

Chicken dinner set for Jan. 10

The Knights of Columbus, 225 E. Market St., Jeffersonville, will sponsor an all-you-can-eat chicken dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 10 at the K of C. Hall.

The menu of chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese, potatoes and gravy, slaw, drink and dessert is $8. A large portion of the proceeds will be given to charity.


Tour New Zealand at the library

The New Albany-Floyd County Public Library is hosting the monthly midday Meet & Mingle at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 6 in the Strassweg Auditorium.

Uwe and Kathy Eickmann will be recalling their experiences in touring the bottom of the world in New Zealand.

Traveling by car, they enjoyed seeing many strange and wonderful sights — penguins and seals, rare birds, Maori natives, glaciers and snow-capped mountains, huge inland lakes and more. They will have photographs that capture the natural beauty of this island country.

Coffee and refreshments will be provided.

Polish your dancing shoes

Sparkles & Spurs will be offering beginner to intermediate line dance lessons every Monday beginning Jan. 6 at the VFW Post 1693, 1919 Grant Line Road, New Albany.

Lessons are from 6 to 8 p.m. in the upstairs ballroom. Cost is $2 with some of the proceeds benefiting the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Family fitness event at FMH

Families start off the new year with a goal to be more physically active with a seminar to be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9. Join trainer Natalie Allen as she gives exercise and time management tips for the whole family.

Parents and children will be able to participate together in a fitness class as part of this seminar.

Hosparus offering free training

Hosparus Southern Indiana needs patient support volunteers in Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Scott and Washington counties and will host free training at its new location in New Albany, 502 Hausfeldt Lane, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 25, with lunch provided.

Volunteers help with patient and family support, administrative duties and development/fundraising. Hosparus carefully selects volunteers and provides them with comprehensive training specially designed to meet the needs of patients and families. Hosparus volunteers must have available transportation and complete training and an application process.

Auditions coming for youth choir

Winter mid-season auditions for the remainder of the Louisville Youth Choir’s 47th season will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at Sacred Heart School for the Arts, Angela Hall, Building 17 at 3105 Lexington Road on the Ursuline Campus, Louisville.

Singers in grades 4 -12 should be prepared to sing scales, sing “My Country ’Tis of Thee” and to clap rhythms.

Students will perform in two remaining main stage concerts: in March, an Arts in Action Spring Concert in partnership with the Kosair Hospital Foundation and a YUM! Brands April Pops Concert at the W.L. Lyons Brown Theatre.
