New Albany man arrested for battery

Woman was allegedly hit in the head with a beer bottle

NEW ALBANY — A New Albany man is facing charges for allegedly beating a woman until she became unconscious.

Donald E. Hines, 50, has been charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a class C felony.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Donald Lackey had been drinking at Uptown Bar earlier this month when he walked out of the door to go home. Hines then allegedly put a hand on Lackey’s shoulder and asked, “Did you talk about my old lady?”

Lackey said Hines then punched him in his face. He said he told Hines that if he wanted to fight, he needed to come to his front yard.

Lackey said Hines and another man chased him. As he was running toward his apartment, Lackey saw Hines hit Lackey’s wife — who had come out in the street to see what was happening — in the head with a beer bottle. Lackey ran inside to call 911. Meanwhile, another witness said she saw Hines hit the woman several more times when she fell down.

Lackey’s wife said she was knocked unconscious and needed four staples in her head.

If convicted, Hines would face two to eight years in jail.

Hines’ attorney, Stephen Beardsley, didn’t return a message for comment by press time.
