40-hour work bill passes House

Donnelly urges Senate to take up similar legislation

— As anticipated, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure Thursday to set a 40-hour work week as the definition for full-time employment.

The Save American Workers Act was sponsored by Rep. Todd Young, R-Ind., and it passed the House by a vote of 248-179. It seeks to repeal the 30-hour definition of full-time employment established by the Affordable Care Act.

The Senate has yet to pass a companion measure.

“As the Senate continues to push for a 25 percent increase in the federal minimum wage, they continue to ignore that millions of hourly workers face as much as a 25 percent pay cut as a result of Obamacare,” Young said in a news release issued following the House vote. “By simply repealing this provision and restoring the traditional 40-hour work week, we can help make an America works.”

Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., co-sponsored the Forty Hours is Full Time Act along with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, last year. The legislation was assigned to a committee and hasn’t received a Senate vote.

After the House approved the Save American Workers Act on Thursday, Donnelly issued a statement supporting the action.

“Right now, employers are cutting their employees’ hours in order to follow the law, and that hurts the pocketbooks of many families across our state,” he said. “Now that the House has passed this bill, I hope we can work together in a bipartisan way to pass this legislation in the Senate, making the health care law work better for families in Indiana and across America.”
