Galligan named new Clark County Democratic chair

Bottorff promises to keep helping party despite stepping aside

CLARKSVILLE — The Clark County Democrats needed a new face to lead them. They chose a familiar one.

Former two-time Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan was named the party’s new chairman at a caucus Saturday at Clarksville Town Hall.

As expected, Galligan and Jeffersonville attorney Dustin White were the two candidates vying for the role. Galligan cruised to victory with nearly a 2-to-1 majority, 57-29.

Galligan promised to pursue quality candidates for elections, and said he will work to strengthen the party as an organization.

“I’m happy, and I look forward to the challenge,” Galligan said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, but there’s a lot of great people in this party, and we’re going to pull together and get things done.”

Galligan told the party before the vote that he was not planning to run for mayor of Jeffersonville again, and wanted to be party chairman to stay involved in politics.

“We’re going to be out there amongst people, and we’re going to be aggressive,” Galligan said. “We’re going to tell our story, tell why they should be voting Democratic.”

Galligan replaces former chairman Bob Bottorff, who said he is stepping aside to allow someone who can give their full attention to the party to take the reins. Bottorff, a Jeffersonville attorney, is running for Clark County prosecutor.

“When I get involved, I want to get involved all the way,” Bottorff explained.

Bottorff said he would continue to help the party and to lend his assistance to Galligan if asked.

“I will do anything and everything I can to help the party,” Bottorff promised.

The party also named a new treasurer at the caucus. Helen Abernathy was unanimously elected to the post by voice vote.
