Police nab suspect in string of burglaries at Jeffersonville churches

Arrested man accused of breaking into at least 12 places of worship

JEFFERSONVILLE — A teenager believed to be responsible for at least 12 recent church burglaries in Jeffersonvile was arrested early Friday morning after a nearly three-hour pursuit.

Brandon Lee Masters, 18, who is considered a transient, was found inside Eastern Heights Baptist Church, located on Helen Road off of 10th Street just south of Interstate 265, about 11 p.m. by Jeffersonville police who responded to an alarm call. Jeffersonville Police Detective Todd Hollis said a responding officer saw Masters through a window and that Masters saw the officer.

Masters left through a side door then fled on foot, evading officers, including a K-9 unit and a Louisville Metro Police Department helicopter brought in to assist in the manhunt, for several hours. Hollis said a citizen approached an officer in they area and said they had seen a man matching Masters’ description going into a home on nearby Sellers Court. Police responded to the home and spoke with the homeowner who said Masters was in the residence.

Hollis said Masters was a “friend of a friend” of one of the home’s residents. The three people in the home exited the house, but Masters initially refused to leave the

home, and police used the threat of sending in a K-9 before Masters surrendered.

Hollis said could not give an address for Masters, saying he told police he “lived under a truck.”

Masters is the suspect in the burglary of 12 to 14 churches that have been broken into since Aug. 17, Hollis said.

Following his arrest at 1:45 a.m. he was preliminarily charged with two counts B felony burglary. The charges stems from the break in at Eastern Heights and at Lincoln Park Church, which Masters admitted to burglarizing earlier in the night, Hollis said.
