'Independents Day' in New Albany

Second annual Indiefest set for Sunday

NEW ALBANY — The second annual New Albany Indiefest will feature more than a dozen bands, two beer gardens and several local vendors, as the 400 block of Bank Street will close on Sunday for the event.

The festival is hosted by New Albany First and showcases local and independent businesses and craftsmanship.

“There’s a lot of talent in New Albany, and I think sometimes it gets overlooked especially by Louisville,” said Marcey Wisman-Bennett, vice president of New Albany First and one of the organizers of Indiefest.

There will be artists booths and local businesses are invited to setup displays during the festival. Wisman-Bennett expects this year’s event will be larger than the inaugural Indiefest.

“It’s a community event, it’s not just adults only,” she said.

There will activities for children as well as live music. Several bands, most with Southern Indiana connections, will play on two stages that will be setup for the event.

Bands slated to perform at Indiefest include The Trust, Ranger and Youngstown Parade.

Admission to the festival is free, but participants can take a Sunny Acres Stables wagon ride for $10. The ride will feature a tour of the historic downtown area as guided by local historian and author Gregg Seidl. Wisman-Bennett said the tour of downtown is meant to coincide with New Albany’s bicentennial.

This year’s festival is being held on Sunday instead of Saturday in hopes that more local businesses will be able to participate.

Wisman-Bennett said several businesses are already signed up to participate.

“We are really proud of how much it has grown in just a year,” she said. “It’s so much fun. It’s laid back and low key.”

The event will run from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. For more information, visit the website www.na1st.org.
