Truck plows through New Albany building

No one injured in downtown accident

NEW ALBANY — “Thank God for Internet problems.”

That was one of the first things Larry Timperman said after a truck ran through the Spring Street facade of his business — Michell Timperman Ritz Architects, 319 Bank St., New Albany, Monday morning.

Troy Michell, who normally sits in the front of the room near the street, had just walked away from his desk to deal with a computer issue when the accident occurred. Another employee was in Charlestown and away from his desk.

“It sounded like an explosion,” Timperman said while looking at the damage inside the building. “I am just glad we had computer issues.”

The accident, involving a Toyota Corolla and pick-up truck, happened around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Spring and Bank streets. The woman driver of the Corolla said she had the green light and began to accelerate through the intersection when she was struck by the truck. The truck spun, and apparently the driver hit the accelerator which sent it flying through building.

Miraculously there were no injuries. Except for being a bit shaken, both drivers and the employees inside the building were not injured.

“Thank God no one was hurt or killed,” Timperman said.

This was the second time in recent years the building has been struck, Timperman said. He said a vehicle also struck the side of the building after the driver had a heart attack.

The truck was not removed from the building until the structure was determined to be stable. Timperman said since there are three levels to the building, work would continue while repairs are made.
