Park in Floyd County features popular Seviren Lang Disc Golf Course

FLOYD COUNTY — Floyd County’s second largest park touts a disc golf course that has been hailed as one of the top tracks in the nation by professionals.

With 53.5 acres, Garry E. Cavan Park trails only Sam Peden Community Park as the largest recreational facility in the Floyd County Parks system.

One of the features of the park is the Seviren Lang Disc Golf Course, which was built in 2008 and hosted the Charlie Vettiner Open last month.

“The park is just gorgeous,” said Adam Embrey, president of the Louisville Disc Golf Club.

The Charlie Vettiner Open is the largest disc golf tournament hosted by the club, as this year’s event included 144 competitors from at least a dozen states and Japan.

The tournament is held at the Charlie Vettiner course in Louisville and Seviren Lang in Edwardsville, as competitors play each of the courses twice.

This year’s men’s professional champion, Barry Schultz, said the Seviren Lang course was one of the top 10 tracks he’s played, Embrey said.

“The course is definitely championship caliber,” he said.

Schultz is a two-time world champion and three-time U.S. champion in disc golf.

The course is named in memory of Seviren Lang, who was the son of Floyd County Parks Board member Leland Lang. The course hosts several disc golf tournaments annually, and is also open to residents who just want to play for fun.

Garry E. Cavan Park is named after the former assistant superintendent and maintenance director who died in 2003, as Cavan spent 28 years with the department. It’s been tabbed as Floyd County’s Park of the Month, the second in the series which started in July with a feature of Campbell-Woodland Nature Trails.

Garry E. Cavan Park, located at 6485 Corydon Ridge Road, primarily serves the northern portion of Floyd County.

“However people visit and reserve shelter houses at the park from all over,” said Sue Crispin, community outreach coordinator for the county parks department.

In addition to the disc golf course, the park features three covered shelters, two playgrounds, lighted tennis courts and basketball courts.
