New Albany man arrested after car crash

Passenger is in critical condition

NEW ALBANY — A New Albany woman is in critical condition and the driver is facing charges following a car accident early Sunday morning.

According to a press release from the Floyd County Prosecutor’s Office, Jesse R. Carter, 18, of New Albany, was driving a 2000 Toyota Celica in the early morning hours when he lost control just after 3 a.m., hitting a tree, then the front porch of one house and the side of another house in the 1600 block of Slate Run Road before stopping between the homes.

Whitney Vaught, 19, who was in the back seat, was ejected from the car. She was not wearing a seatbelt. Vaught was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition. Two other passengers in the car suffered non-life threatening injuries. No one in either of the homes was injured.

Carter was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, illegal consumption of alcohol and possession of marijuana.

Police believe alcohol and speed are significant factors in the crash.
