VAN HOY: New Albany’s history, week-by-week

NEW ALBANY — Two-hundred years. More than 72,800 days. That’s how long New Albany has been around as a municipality.

That’s a lot of time for events to happen and for people to make a difference in a community.

A couple of months ago, a few of us at the News and Tribune sat down and started discussing some of those names and happenings, with a goal of arriving at 52 events and people who shaped New Albany.

We then assembled a small committee and wrote down names, places and goings-on. We hit about 80 and are still in the process of paring it down to the number that will give readers one highlight from the rich history of New Albany per week.

The series starts today with information on the settling and founding of the city, which will be covered in two parts, continuing next week.

Starting Jan. 9, these profiles will appear on Wednesdays in the News and Tribune, generally on page A3.

In general, these articles will appear in chronological order, to build up to present day through New Albany’s history. However, some will be tied to the specific time of year they happened, such as the history or Harvest Homecoming or revisiting state basketball titles, just to give readers a quick preview of things to come.

The News and Tribune would like to thank the three committee members who helped brainstorm ideas for this list and will continue to be a wealth of information through the year-long series. We wish to publicly recognize David Barksdale, Marcia Booker and Vic Megenity for their participation and keen memories.

We hope you read the series and enjoy looking back and some of the events and people that have helped make New Albany a city with a storied history.
