Civil Air Patrol to lay nearly 800 wreaths at New Albany National Cemetery

The event takes place at noon Saturday

NEW ALBANY — A holiday tribute to veterans will come to New Albany on Saturday as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day.

The Civil Air Patrol Indiana Wing, Falcon Composite Squadron, will conduct a Wreaths Across America ceremony at noon Saturday, Dec. 15 at the New Albany National Cemetery, 1943 Ekin Ave.

The squadron will place 787 wreaths on the headstones of veterans laid to rest in the cemetery. It is projected that more than 400,000 wreaths will be placed nationwide by more than 150,000 volunteers as part of the program.

Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve — including their families who sacrifice — and teach our children the cost of the freedoms we enjoy each day. The wreaths laid on the headstones are purchased through donations from the general public.

Wreaths Across America began more than 20 years ago when the Worcester Wreath Co. from Harrington, Maine, placed wreaths on the headstones of the nation’s fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery. Recognition of the service and sacrifice of our veterans, and their families, is especially poignant during the traditional holiday season.

Worcester continues to be a major supporter of the project, donating more than 30,000 total wreaths in 2011. Wreaths will be placed in all 50 states and at 24 national cemeteries on foreign soil.

The public is invited to attend the wreath-laying ceremony at the New Albany National Cemetery, where more than 6,000 veterans are laid to rest.
