Indiana panel taking up school security proposal

INDIANAPOLIS — A proposal for Indiana to start offering grants to help public schools hire police officers and buy safety equipment is set to go before a legislative committee.

The House Education Committee is scheduled on Tuesday to consider the plan that would set up a two-year matching grant program providing schools up to $50,000 a year and establishing a state commission to make recommendations for securing school buildings.

The bill doesn’t require any school district action, but its supporters hope it would encourage districts to hire police officers who’ve undergone extra training on how to deal with students and school facilities.

The sponsor says work on the bill had already started before the December elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 students and six educators dead.
