Driver taken to hospital after semi fire

Semi-tractor went up in flames after air conditioning turned on, man says

SELLERSBURG — A Tennessee truck driver was taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after his semi-tractor caught fire Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 65.

Troopers from the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg responded to the fire at mile marker seven on northbound I-65 and found a 2013 Volvo semi-tractor engulfed in flames.

The driver, John P. Dutra, 37, from Hillsboro, Tenn., sustained smoke inhalation and was transported by ambulance to Clark Memorial Hospital. The semi-tractor had to be towed from the scene.

The 2009 Wabash Trailer being pulled by the tractor was not damaged. The driver stated he was north on Interstate 65 and when he turned on the air conditioner in the semi-tractor he smelled something burning. By the time the driver pulled off of the roadway, the semi-tractor was engulfed in flames. The driver was driving for Reliable Carriers Inc. from Manchester, Tenn.

Troopers at the scene were assisted by Sellersburg Fire and Rural Metro Ambulance. The roadway was closed for about 35 minutes while the fire was being extinguished.
