Scribner House in New Albany granted funds for project

19 windows to be replaced in circa-1814 home

NEW ALBANY — The Scribner House has received a gift for its 200-year anniversary.

The Piankeshaw Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, or DAR, announced last week it has received a $20,000 matching grant to restore the 19 windows of the Scribner House.

DAR is a nonprofit that maintains the Scribner House, which was the home of New Albany founding father Joel Scribner.

The project will include the construction of wooden storm windows to replace the modern ones in the Scribner House.

“Getting the grant this year, which is the Scribner House’s Bicentennial year, is wonderful,” said Carlene Price, outgoing regent for DAR and the chair for the restoration project.

The window replacements will coincide with other improvements to the Scribner House being fueled primarily by a $75,000 grant from the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County.

The latest grant was awarded by the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology via the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund.

The Scribner House is located at the intersection of State and Main streets in downtown New Albany, and is open for tours by appointment. For more information, call 812-949-1776.
