Bennett forum coming to Ivy Tech

Tony Bennett, the Republican candidate for state superintendent of public instruction, will answer questions and give his position on various issues at a public forum at 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at Ivy Tech Community College.

The forum, sponsored by Leadership Southern Indiana and One Southern Indiana, will be in the Community Room of the Horseshoe Foundation Assembly Center in Ogle Hall. No registration is required to attend, but questions can be submitted to

LSI hosting Day at the Downs

Leadership Southern Indiana (LSI) will host a Day at the Downs on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Churchill Downs in Millionaires Row. Gates open at 11 a.m., with post time at 12:40 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for dues-paying LSI members and $34.50 for guests. Ticket price includes a gourmet buffet, entry and a program.

Parks board to meet Oct. 16

The New Albany-Floyd County Parks Board meeting will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the YMCA in New Albany. The meeting had originally been scheduled for Oct. 23. There will be an executive session prior to the 6 p.m. public meeting.

FMH employees star in breast cancer awareness video

More than 250 staff members at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services are starring in their own Pink Glove Dance video to help spread the word about breast cancer awareness and prevention. The video was submitted to a national competition to determine the best Pink Glove Dance video of 2012.

As part of the Pink Glove Dance 2012 competition, Floyd Memorial’s video will be posted on on Oct. 12 along with the videos of the other participants to be viewed by the public. Viewers can vote on their favorite video [voting requires a Facebook account] from Oct. 12-26. The top three winners receive a $10,000, $5,000 or $2,000 donation in their name to the breast cancer charity of their choice. Winners will be announced Nov. 2 on

St. Mary’s yard sale Oct. 19

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Eight and Spring streets, New Albany, will host a yard and bake sale, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and Oct. 20, in the parish school cafeteria.

The sale will include thousands of items, house wares, furniture, clothing, decorative items, toys, and much more. There will be homemade goodies from some of the best bakers in town. Coffee and donuts will be for sale both days, hot dogs and chili on Saturday.

Legion hosting Octoberfest

American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion, 217 W. Court Ave., Jeffersonville, will sponsor an Octoberfest, indoors, beginning at 9 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the American Legion Hall.

Booth rental space is $20 per table. Funds collected from booth rentals will go to support military veterans and families.

All you can eat breakfast will be served from 9 to 11 a.m. for $5 per person. Lunch will be served beginning at noon and music will be provided Saturday evening from 6 to 10 p.m.

GOP candidates at Cluckers Oct. 16

Smoking Cessation seminar Oct. 18

The Health Ministry team at Catholic Community of Jeffersonville, is sponsoring a Smoking Cessation Seminar at 7 p.m., Oct. 18, at St. Augustine’s Parish Hall, 315 Chestnut St., Jeffersonville.

Annie Reise from Clark County Tobacco Coalition will speak about the free programs offered by the State of Indiana to help smokers quit.


Auditions for play are Saturday
