Part of Spring Street in New Albany to close for drainage repairs

City sets official Halloween hours

NEW ALBANY — A portion of Spring Street near the Interstate 64 interchanges will close beginning Monday for repair work to storm sewer lines.

Neither of the interstate ramps will be closed due to the project, which is being funded and managed by the Indiana Department of Transportation since that portion of Spring Street is a state road.

Spring Street will be closed just west of the I-64 east ramp for up to 14 days. City officials said they understood a pipe had broken in the area, and INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield described the project as an emergency repair.

“Obviously, pipes of all types are an important part of our infrastructure, and getting those repaired when the times are appropriate, and this is an emergency repair, are important,”  Wingfield said Tuesday.

New Albany Street Commissioner Mickey Thompson said INDOT agreed to delay the project due to last week’s festival crowds.

“They were going to do it sooner and we asked them to wait until after Harvest Homecoming,” he said.

Lane closure for Sherman Minton on Sunday

One eastbound lane of I-64 on the lower deck of the Sherman Minton Bridge will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, for an analysis for potential repairs.

According to INDOT, crews will take samples of the concrete driving surface on the deck to determine if it needs to be replaced. INDOT stated the type of analysis isn’t structural in nature.

The exam is weather permitting. If a second day for a lane closure is needed, it would occur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24.

Halloween hours set

Also Tuesday, the New Albany Board of Public Works and Safety set the city’s official Halloween trick-or-treat hours for 5 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

The vote passed 2-1. Board member Warren Nash said he felt the period was too long, so he voted against the measure.
