Jeffersonville City Council honors Phil Bates

JEFFERSONVILLE — At Monday’s Jeffersonville City Council meeting the council took a moment to honor Phil Bates, a long-time employee of Jeffersonville’s housing authority and community activist.

Councilman Nathan Samuel introduced Bates, offering a brief description of his activism in the community. Bates began working with the Jeffersonville Housing Authority in the 1960s and eventually became the executive director of the organization. In addition, Bates has served on numerous boards in the city.

He retired from his executive director position in October.

“Thank you for 43 years of dedicated service assisting and caring for those in need,” Samuel said reading the plaque presented to Bates. “You have made a difference in the lives of countless individuals.”

Bates thanked the city officials and those he worked with at the housing authority.

“The city of Jeff has changed,” he said. “The city needs to continue to change. One of the things the city needs to complete ... is a comprehensive plan. And that comprehensive plan needs to include a vision with regards to subsidy housing in this community.”
