Pets banned from Big Four bridge

Dog waste was a persistent problem

LOUISVILLE — Despite efforts to correct a problem of dogs pooping on the Big Four Bridge, the issue persisted and pets have been banned from the pedestrian span.

The Waterfront Development Corp. made the announcement Wednesday afternoon that pets will no longer be permitted on the bridge, according to a report from newsgathering partner WLKY-TV.

Officials evaluated concerns about allowing animals on the bridge after problems with people not picking up after them, according to the report.

According to a press release from the Waterfront Development Corp. on March 4, the rule being violated was “one that shouldn’t even need to be stated, as it is a city ordinance — keep your pets on leashes and come prepared to pick up after them. We’re giving it another 30 days for the situation to improve; if it doesn’t, unfortunately pets will be banned from the bridge.”

A Responsible Rally for Rover on the Big Four Bridge was held March 24 to draw attention to the issue of irresponsible pet owners. However, that too did not resonate with the those unwilling to clean up after their pets.
