Family fish fry results in stabbing in Jeffersonville

Man found near home with blood on hands, clothing

JEFFERSONVILLE — A man was stabbed in Jeffersonville during a cookout Friday when a fight broke out over how fish was being prepared, police reported.

Michael Baines, 44, Jonquil Drive in Jeffersonville, was arrested on preliminary charges of class B felony aggravated battery and class C felony battery after police responded to the home.

At the time of his arrest, Baines had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Clark County stemming from a class D felony intimidation charge from a March 10 incident.

Police were notified of the fight along Pratt Street after a neighbor contacted police about 9 p.m. Police responded to an alley between parallel Pratt and Penn streets. An officer found several people in the area and discovered a man lying on the ground bleeding from his face and back.

The officer found a laceration in the man’s back “ ... an inch wide and deep enough to realize it had come from a sharp-cutting object,” according to the police report.

When asked what had happened, the man replied by shaking his head and saying he would take care of it, police reported.

“I’ll kill him,” the man told the officer.

The man was uncooperative with police and was later transported to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment.

The officer found that a cookout had taken place nearby and saw a large butcher’s knife near a grill. The knife had what appeared to be blood on the tip of its blade, according to the report. A resident of the home said she had hosted a cookout when an altercation began between Baines and his cousin.

“They got into an argument over the fish not being cooked,” according to the report.

The man who was later stabbed had thrown hot grease on Baines, police were told. No witness reported that Baines had stabbed his cousin, according to the report.

A second officer who responded to the front of the Pratt Street home found a group of people walking from the home onto the street. The officer was given the description of a man, later identified as Baines, who was seen walking toward the alley between Pratt and Penn streets.

“[Baines] looked at me and then continued to walk toward Penn Street as I continuously told Baines to stop,” the officer reported.

After the officer caught up with Baines, he asked him where he had been, and Baines responded he didn’t know. The officer reported Baines was found sweating heavily and had blood on his hands, shirt and pants. He told police he had been at the cookout and his cousin had thrown frying grease on him. He said the blood on his hands and clothing had come from a cut he had accidentally received while preparing food.

Before being taken to the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex on battery charges, Baines was transported the Jeffersonville police station for questioning by detectives.

According to online court records, Baines has not been officially charged in the incident.
